OLD CARS NEVER DIE HERE, THEY JUST GO FASTER!
Have you always wanted to drive an old car? A Chevrolet Sedan, a 1926 Rolls Royce or a Ford A Truckster? Then you might like to check out the WABI-club. It is a car club with antique, vintage and classic cars. The WABI-club is stationed on the island of Curaçao, in the South Caribbean.
WABI
The WABI-club is named after the Wabi-tree, which grows in the bushland forest of Curaçao (the Mondi). One of the founders is Benjamin 'Shon Benchi' Wefer who one day found his car in the Mondi with a Wabi-tree growing under the bonnet. He took the car home and repaired it, following this on the 31st of October 1965 the WABI-club was established. What once started out as a joke by naming all the cars WABI, has since turned into a car club with approximately a hundred members. The present President of WABI is Daniel de Sousa.
HISTORY
The first car that 'Shon Benchi' found in the Mondi, was completely broken. ‘Shon Benshi' gradually got the 1928 Ford A Convertible model back into good condition. Helena, as 'Shon Benchi' called the car, was later even used during 'Princess Carnival'.
Rumour has it that the WABI-club once had their own clubhouse, a long time ago. A building that was rented from the 'Fraternan di Skerpene' for only 85 Antillean guilders (approximately 40 dollars).
ACTIVITIES
All cars are available for wedding hire. There are also old cars being repaired and shown at events, as well as a number of cars for sale. Hence the club motto: Old cars never die here, they just go faster!

Hebt u altijd al in een oude auto willen rijden? In een Chevrolet Sedan, Rolls Royce uit 1926 of een Ford A Truckster? Dan moet u eens kijken bij de WABI club. Het is een autoclub met antieke, vintage en klassieke auto's. De WABI club is gevestigd op Curaçao, in de Zuid-Caribbean.

De WABI club dankt zijn naam aan de Wabi-boom die groeit in het bos van Curaçao (de mondi). Een van de oprichters, Benjamin 'Shon Benchi' Wefer vond zijn auto in de mondi met een wabi-boom die door zijn motorbak was gegroeid. Hij nam de auto mee naar huis en knapte hem helemaal op. En toen werd op 31 oktober 1965 de WABI club gestart. Wat begonnen was als een grapje, namelijk alle auto's wabi noemen, heeft geleid tot een autoclub met ongeveer honderd leden.
GESCHIEDENIS
Van de eerste auto die 'Shon Benchi' in de mondi vond, was niet veel meer over. De Ford A Convertible uit 1928 werd langzaamaan opgeknapt en in goede staat gebracht. Helena, zoals 'Shon Benchi' haar noemde, werd later zelfs gebruikt om de 'Carnaval Prinses' door de stad te rijden.
Roddel: Er wordt gezegd dat de WABI-club een eigen clubhuis had, lang geleden. Een gebouw dat werd gehuurd van de 'Fraternan di Skerpene' voor maar 85 Antilliaanse gulden (ongeveer 40 dollar).
ACTIVITEITEN
Alle auto's zijn beschikbaar om te huren voor huwelijken. Daarnaast worden ook oude auto's gerepareerd en zijn er te evenementen waarbij alle auto's tentoongesteld worden. Ook zijn er een aantal auto's te koop. Niet voor niets is het motto van de club: Old Cars Never Die Here, They Just Go Faster!
